ILACHE is a statewide organization dedicated to the advancement of the status of Latinos through educational policy reform, identification of best practices, and the dissemination of research and information.

The Mission of ILACHE

  • To create awareness of Latino higher education issues and advocate for change.
  • To provide a statewide forum for Latino educators, community representatives and others who are committed to Latino representation, advancement and professional success.

Why is a Latino Higher Education Agenda Needed?

  • In 2006 only 11% of Latinos had competed four years of college or more.
  • Only 10% of college-age Latinos in Illinois were enrolled in a college or university in 1999.
  • Only 14% of Latinos in Illinois were enrolled in a community college in 1999.
  • Less than 3% of all full-time faculty were Latino while Latinos received only 3.5% of all doctorates awarded in 2006.
  • Latinos continue to be enrolled primarily in community colleges with only a fraction of these students transferring and graduating from baccalaureate programs.
  • The lack of sufficient financial aid discourages Latinos from attending college and increases the burden of those who do.
  • According to the 2000 census, Latinos are the fastest growing population nationally and in the state of Illinois.
  • The Latino population growth accounted for 35% of the total population growth.
  • Latinos have grown 41.1% in Illinois.
